I woke up this morning thinking about the election and feeling trepidation about it all. And then almost immediately one of Momma’s last clear messages came to mind. And I smiled to myself, as I thought about the truth and comfort in her simple sentences. Just six words total. But six words overflowing with meaning and power.
She said them just a couple weeks before Jesus took her Home. She was barely saying anything at that point. She hadn’t been walking for months. She hadn’t been feeding herself for about a year. It was heartbreaking to see her declining. Her mind was mostly gone, yet God would still use her words sometimes to speak to our souls.
My twenty-one year old daughter was over at Mom’s taking care of her that day. Momma looked at Annie and said, “God is here.”
“Yes, Grandma, God is here.”
Momma added, “He is bigger.”
We’ve always wondered if Momma actually saw God or an angel that day. We’ve heard it is more common for things like that to happen as death approaches. But whether she saw someone, or not, her words are true. And they brought us great comfort then.
I haven’t thought of her message for months now. But today they are ringing clear and shouting in my heart. This world is a scary place. We are in perilous times. Hurricanes, fires, and earthquakes pummel our world while a pandemic sickens and bereaves thousands.
Add to that social unrest and riots, and in the US a very heated presidential election, and we have become a stressed out people on edge. Waiting to see what happens next.
Holding our breath.
But Momma’s words call me to let it all go. To take a deep breath and then exhale. Momma’s words remind me of the solid truth that God is here. And He is bigger!
He is bigger than presidential elections and weather catastrophes. He is bigger than riots and social unrest. He is bigger than this pandemic.
“The nations are in chaos, and their kingdoms crumble! God’s voice thunders and the earth melts! The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress.” (Psalm 46:6-7, NLT)
“God is our refuge and strength, aways ready to help in times of trouble, so we will not fear…” (Ps. 46:1-2a, NLT)
“Be still and know that I am God!” (Ps. 46:10a. NLT)
God is here. He is bigger.
Let’s pray for our world. Let’s do what He calls us to do to show love to others.
And let’s take refuge in Him. We can rest under the shelter of His wings. We can take comfort knowing that He is bigger and stronger than any of the threats around us. We can fall asleep in the storm knowing that our Abba Father is watching over us.
God is here. He is bigger.

Thank you for sharing these Six words of comfort. They are comforting, indeed. I think my faith has been pretty strong through all of this, but when there’s the constant noise of the ‘talking heads’ and all the media coverage (which I try to avoid as much as possible), these are 6 words I can remember to remind myself that God is here and He is bigger! Thank you!
Thank you for reading and commenting, Lynette! Keep the faith!
Thank you Cheryl…what perfect words for the time right now.
Thank you so, Lynn! You are always inspiring and encouraging, my joyful friend!
Thank you , Cheryl., for sharing your gift of encouragement with us. Yes, God is here and He IS bigger. I do believe God was there with your dear mom even in her darkest of days and spoke those words to her heart. I know He is still with my mom. He knows. He sees. AND He is able “to do above and beyond what we could even think or imagine.”
Thank you, Ivy! And amen! It is such a comfort to know God is with our loved ones and with us!
